About De Sering
De Sering was created in 2019; its mission:
To (re)build communities through food, as it deems this critical for activism and for the political left as a whole in the current social landscape.

De Sering came from the shared belief that strong communities are essential.
We live in a time in which social connections seem to have weakened, and with them, the strength of activist and leftist movements. This was the sentiment that served as motivation to launch a community-driven space where food, culture, and activism intersect.
At the heart of De Sering is the Community Kitchen, fostering connection through affordable, plant-based meals. Currently serving an average of over 300 donation-based meals daily to ensure food remains accessible. Throughout each week, we host events, workshops, and cultural programming, creating a lively, inclusive atmosphere where everyone is welcome.
In November 2025, the force behind this project made it possible to open our first branch off of De Sering's tree, at De Sering Centraal. This extension brought our values to Amsterdam's city centre, creating more public space connection.
In 2020 under De Sering, TestTafel started as a series of one-off dinners and quickly became an experimental restaurant and the foundation through which employment and a platform for all people, chefs and creatives to develop their professional skills and culinary concepts. Now based at Mediamatic Biotoop, TestTafel offers an innovative multi-course plant-based dining experience.
Together, De Sering and TestTafel bridge social divides through food, creativity, and community-driven initiatives: because now, more than ever, solidarity matters.

2019
In 2019, De Sering began as a neighbourhood kitchen in the east of Amsterdam. Within five months, it grew from a few first visitors into a real meeting place where we served around 350 meals a week (now being our daily average).
2020
After our forced COVID break, we reopened from community centre NieuwLand. At this time, TestTafel was also born. What started as a limited fundraising dinner pop-up took off to form its own foundation and restaurant.
2022
We received an offer we could not refuse; a space at the theatre community, De Sloot. We moved all our stuff to a dusty old factory hall and started our first crowdfunding campaign to bring our vision to life. Our current headquarters and in the first place we could really call ours.
2025
Since then, we built a fully functional kitchen out of nothing, renovated it completely by ourselves, served tens of thousands of meals, catered many protests, and hosted countless events. This year gained significance as it marked the milestone of our second location, De Sering Centraal.
The future
As we look to the years ahead, our aim remains to expand and build a network of sociocratically organized locations led by participants, fostering community, and addressing loneliness and hunger. Beyond cooking and serving food, our dream is to offer services like childcare and educational courses to make activism and politics more accessible.
